Grace Hopper

  • Died: 1st January 1992 — 85 years old

When we think about the pioneers of computing, names like Alan Turing often come up. But one of the most influential — and fascinating — figures in tech history is Grace Hopper, a woman who helped transform computers from complex machines into tools people could actually use.

From Mathematics to Machines

Born in 1906, Grace Hopper had a sharp mind for mathematics from an early age. She went on to earn a PhD in maths from Yale University — a rare achievement for a woman at the time.

During World War II, she joined the U.S. Navy Reserve and was assigned to work on one of the earliest computers, the Harvard Mark I. This massive machine could perform calculations far faster than humans, but programming it was incredibly complicated.

The Birth of Modern Programming

At a time when computers only understood long strings of numbers, Hopper had a bold idea: what if humans could write instructions in plain language, and the computer could translate them?

This led to the creation of the first compiler — a tool that converts human-readable code into machine code. It was a breakthrough that laid the foundation for modern programming languages.

Hopper later played a key role in developing COBOL, one of the first widely used programming languages designed for business. Even today, COBOL still runs in banking systems and government infrastructure around the world.

The Famous “Bug” Story

Grace Hopper is also credited with popularising the term “debugging.” While working on a computer, her team found an actual moth stuck in the hardware causing a malfunction. They taped it into their logbook and jokingly referred to it as the first “bug.”

The term stuck — and today, developers everywhere still “debug” their code.

A Legacy That Still Shapes Technology

Grace Hopper didn’t just contribute to computing — she helped redefine it. By making programming more accessible, she opened the door for generations of developers and innovators.

She eventually rose to the rank of Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy and remained an active voice in technology well into her later years, inspiring countless people to pursue careers in computing.

Today, her legacy lives on in everything from the software we use daily to events like the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing — one of the largest gatherings of women in tech in the world.
