  • Born: 23rd December 1938
  • Died: Still living — 87 years old

Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn are widely known as the “fathers of the internet” because they developed the core technology that allows computer networks around the world to communicate.

Creating the Language of the Internet

In the 1970s, Cerf and Kahn worked together to solve a major problem: different computer networks couldn’t easily communicate with one another.

Their solution was the creation of Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol — better known as TCP/IP.

This system became the universal communication standard for the internet.

Why TCP/IP Was Revolutionary

TCP/IP allowed:

  • Data to be split into packets
  • Information to travel across multiple networks
  • Computers worldwide to communicate reliably

Without these protocols, the modern internet simply wouldn’t function.

From Research Project to Global Network

Their work was heavily supported by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which funded early networking research.

What began as an experimental networking system eventually evolved into the global internet used by billions today.

A Lasting Legacy

The technologies Cerf and Kahn developed remain at the heart of modern networking, powering:

  • Websites
  • Email
  • Streaming services
  • Online gaming
  • Cloud computing

Why They Still Matter

Every online interaction — from sending a message to watching a video — relies on ideas pioneered by Cerf and Kahn.

They didn’t just help build the internet — they created the rules that allow the digital world to connect.
